JEE – Joint Entrance Examination
Joint Entrance Examination that is JEE is one of the most popular competitive examinations in India. The exam takes place twice in a year – January session and April session. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to offer admission to qualifying students in the engineering colleges of India. These colleges include the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institute of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) and centrally funded technological institutes. JEE exam has two parts – Main and Advanced. Every year lakhs of students sit for the JEE exam to get admission to India’s top engineering colleges.
IIT JEE | Sections
JEE Main is for a duration of 3 hours. There are 3 sections in the examination consisting of different subjects. The JEE Main B.E/B. Tech paper has 3 sections – Physics, Chemistry, Maths. The B.Arch paper also has 3 sections that are Maths, Aptitude Test, and Drawing Test. A new paper that is B.Planning has been added to the JEE Main 2020 pattern. The question paper for this course will have 3 sections. The sections are Maths, Aptitude Test, and Planning based multiple type questions. Based on the ranking of the JEE Main examination a student can apply to NITs and other centrally funded institutions.
Only those students who qualify the cut off released by the JEE for the Main examination are allowed to sit in the JEE Advanced exam. The Advanced exam is especially for admission to IITs. The JEE Advanced exam has two papers. For each paper, students are allotted 3 hours. Paper – 1 and Paper – 2 consists of 3 sections that are maths, Physics, and Chemistry. All students have to sit in both the papers to qualify for the exam. Both the papers are compulsory.
IIT JEE | Exam Pattern
JEE Main and Advanced both are computer-based online examination conducted by NTA. The questions asked are multiple-choice questions. This means that for each question there will be 4 options given, out of which only one is correct. Students have to mark the option with the correct answer. There is negative marking for every wrong answer. The marking scheme and the total number of questions is different for Main and Advanced.
JEE Main exam pattern
The JEE Main exam is for 3 hours. It has three papers for three different courses that are B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Planning. The latter one is added newly in the pattern from the current year of 2020 JEE Main exam.
The B.Tech paper has a total of 75 questions among which 60 questions are multiple-choice questions and 15 questions have numerical value answers (Fill in the blanks). Each of the three sections has 25 questions. There is negative marking for MCQ questions and for every wrong answer one mark is deducted whereas, for every correct answer in the MCQ type and numerical type, four marks are awarded. There is no negative marking in the numerical type questions.
The B.Arch question paper has a total of 77 questions, out of which 25 questions are of maths, 50 questions are asked from aptitude, and 2 questions of Drawing. There 5 numerical value based questions for which there is no negative marking. The other 70 questions are of MCQ type and 2 questions are from Drawing.
The newly introduced paper of B.Planning has 100 questions in total. Maths section has 25 questions, the other 25 questions are asked from planning, and rest 50 questions are of aptitude section. Out of the total questions, 95 are MCQ types and 5 are numerical value-based questions. There is a marking scheme of +4 for every correct answer and -1 for every MCQ type wrong answer.

JEE Advanced exam pattern
JEE Advanced has two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2 for 3 hours each. The number of questions in JEE Advanced varies every year. But the marking scheme is followed in the same way. In Paper-1 for every correct answer, +3 marks are awarded whereas +4 is added for one or more correct answers. There is a negative marking of -1 for every incorrect MCQ type answer. The numerical value-based answer question has 3 marks each with no negative marks. Paper – 2 consists of MCQ questions of 4 marks each, numerical value questions of 3 marks, and list matching question of 3 marks each. -1 mark is subtracted for every wrong MCQ answer. There is no provision of negative marking in the list and numerical value questions.

IIT JEE | Exam Registration
The registration process for the JEE exam starts with the release of the online application form for JEE Main because to qualify for JEE Advanced one has to pass Main’s cut off. The application process for both January and April sessions is the same.
- Visit the official website of JEE Main – nta.nic.in
- Click on the link for the online Application form.
- If you have appeared in the previous year then you can apply with the previous year’s credentials or can start afresh registration in case you have not written the previous session.
- After proceeding with the registration procedure, an application number will be generated.
- Students will also be asked to fill details like name, parents’ name, educational details, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and email address.
- After the completion of the application form, one also has to scan and upload documents. These documents are important to submit along with the form as not submitting the documents may lead to the rejection of the form.
- The documents to be submitted are photograph, signature, class 12th mark sheet or admit card and class 10th admit card or certificate.
- The next step is to pay the registration fee for the online application form. Although students can pay the fee later but, without the registration fee payment, the form submission is incomplete.
- Candidates can pay the fee online through net banking or other online methods.
Note: Candidate must ensure that the payment status on the application form should show “OK”. Unless the status is “OK” please make the second payment. The unsuccessful payment will be refunded to the source.
- Download and print the submitted application form for future reference.
Those who pass the cut off marks are then requested to register again for the JEE Advanced exam from its official website. Students are asked to log in using their JEE Main application number and password. They will be then directed to select the exam center. Applicants then have to again upload documents like photograph, signature, class 10th and class 12th certificate. A registration fee has to be paid for the final submission of the JEE Advanced exam online registration form.
IIT JEE | Who can apply?
Students who have qualified class 12th examination from a recognized board or university are eligible to apply for the JEE exam. There are other required eligibility criteria that one must qualify to be allowed to write the exam. The common eligibility criteria are:
- There is no age limit for appearing in JEE.
- Students who have passed in class 12th or equivalent exam in 2018, 2019, and appearing in 2020 can apply for the JEE Main exam.
- Students can sit for the JEE Main exam for 3 consecutive years. Two sessions of one year shall be counted as one attempt.
- Aspirants of JEE must have passed class 12th or equivalent examination from a recognized board or university.
- The minimum marks in mathematics must be 50% in the qualifying exam and 50% aggregate marks in the class 12th examination are necessary.
- Physics, Chemistry, and Maths must be compulsory main subjects of study in the qualifying examination.
If a student fails to meet the minimum requirement as decided by the JEE authority, his admission is canceled even if he qualifies the cut off marks.
IIT JEE | Result Announcement
The result for JEE Main B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning are released separately on the official website of JEE Main. You can download the result from jeemain.nta.nic.in/ nta.ac.in. NTA will award percentile scores to students and not ranks as before. NTA uses the Normalization Technique to nullify the results of various difficulty levels of the question paper set. JEE Main Result will be compiled for January and April sessions, and the final merit list will be formulated. The higher of the two scores will be considered for the merit list for candidates appearing in both sessions.
To prevent ties, NTA can use percentiles of up to 7 decimal points. Further ties are to be managed, if any, using the following criteria:
- The first preference is to be given to the student scoring the highest marks in Maths.
- The second preference is given on the basis of highest marks in Physics.
- The third preference for admission is given to the candidate having the highest marks in Chemistry.
- Last, the tie will be resolved by giving preference to the one who is older.
JEE Advanced Result will be announced by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on the official site the JEE Advanced. Students can use their application number and password to check their JEE Advanced results. The result is a scorecard with details of candidate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as well as the overall score in both Papers I and Paper II, Common Rank List (CRL), group and candidate details. Candidates must download their scorecard to enroll in the counseling and admission process after JEE Advanced Result is released. The qualified students are given admission to the IITs if they meet the eligibility criteria.

IIT JEE | Cut-off
Only those candidates who meet the specified JEE Main cutoff will be able to appear for the JEE Advanced IIT admissions test. Candidates will have access to the qualifying cutoff along with the JEE Main score. The JEE Main entry cutoff would be the minimum rank that must be obtained to have higher chances of entry to participating institutes. The cutoff on admission will be issued after each round of allocation by the JoSAA authorities. As the JEE Main cutoff is being planned, the authorities concerned will consider various factors relating to the study. It is worth remembering that the JEE Main cutoff would be different for each group, course, and college.
The JEE Advanced cutoff is given to students, as released via the brochure by IIT Delhi. JEE Advanced’s cutoff is the minimum marks that a candidate needs to score individually on all three subjects and also on average to qualify for selection in the specific rank list. Students who qualify based on the final JEE Advanced cutoff released after the result declaration will be qualified for admission in institutes that accept admission.
