The High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), located in Sutarwadi, Pune, is a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The laboratory is engaged in basic and applied research in high energy materials, including the formulation, design, and development of propellants, high explosives, pyrotechnics, polymeric materials, liners, and insulators. HEMRL also conducts studies on physicochemical properties, combustion characteristics, detonation phenomena, and the development of advanced defence material systems used by India’s armed forces.
Through its paid internship program, HEMRL invites applications from eligible engineering and science students to gain practical exposure to defence research and development. The internship is offered for a duration of six months, during which students work on research projects related to high energy materials and associated technologies. Selected interns receive a stipend of ₹5,000 per month, and a completion certificate is awarded after successfully finishing the internship, submitting project work, and meeting all institutional requirements.
The internship is open to students who are pursuing undergraduate engineering degrees (7th or 8th semester) or postgraduate engineering/science programs (M.Tech or M.Sc – 1st or 2nd year) from recognized Indian universities or institutes. Applicants must have a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale and should have a strong academic record. The internship is available in several disciplines including Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Engineering, among others. Candidates must also be below 28 years of age and will be selected based on merit and academic performance.
Interested students must submit their applications through Speed Post in the prescribed format to the Director of HEMRL. The application envelope should clearly mention “Application for Paid Internship” along with the relevant branch code to ensure proper processing of the application. Applicants must also include a request letter from the Principal or Director of their institution, along with required documents such as academic records and identification details.
