The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) is one of the premier laboratories under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), located in Visakhapatnam. NSTL plays a crucial role in strengthening India’s underwater defence capabilities by developing advanced naval weapon systems and cutting-edge marine technologies.

Established with a mission to empower the Indian Navy, NSTL focuses on research and development of torpedoes, underwater sensors, control systems, and high-end naval engineering solutions. The lab brings together some of India’s brightest scientists and engineers to work on mission-critical defence technologies that safeguard the nation’s maritime borders.

For students and researchers, NSTL is not just a laboratory, it is a centre of excellence where innovation meets national service. An internship here offers exposure to real-time defence projects, hands-on technical learning, and mentorship from experts working at the forefront of naval research.

Internship at DRDO NSTL

DRDO NSTL Internships are among the most prestigious defence research internships available to engineering and science students in India. The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory offers both short-term internships (8 weeks) and long-term internships (6 months), providing students with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge defence R&D. Interns get exposure to real projects related to underwater naval warfare systems and marine defence technologies developed for the Indian Navy. Selected students may contribute to research in advanced torpedo systems, working on areas such as propulsion systems, guidance and control algorithms, acoustic homing technology, warhead integration, and hydrodynamic optimization. The internship also provides expert mentorship, valuable practical exposure, and a completion certificate from one of India’s most prestigious DRDO laboratories.

Students from Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, Chemical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Naval Architecture, Physics & Chemistry can apply for the internship. The DRDO NSTL internship will be announced in April-May. The basic requirement is 75% in B.Tech, MSc or M.Tech.

DRDO labs typically require:

  • A request letter from your Principal / HoD
  • On official college letterhead
  • Mentioning duration (6 months)
  • Confirming it is part of academic requirement (training/project)

Without this, applications are often rejected.

You also need to send the following once you are selected, so keep them ready.

  • Updated Resume (1–2 pages)
  • Latest semester marksheet
  • Aadhaar card copy
  • Bonafide certificate
  • College request letter

How to Apply: Candidates must send a scanned copy of the application form duly filled in all respects, along with the reference/request letter from their college for the paid internship (as per the attached format), to the Director, NSTL via email only; no hard copy of the application will be accepted. Applications should be forwarded to intern-hrd@gov.in, and the email subject must be written as β€œApplication for Paid Internship with Branch Code for which the Candidate is Applying.” The last date to submit the application is 23 March 2026 at 17:00 hrs, and emails received after the specified date and time will not be considered.

Two Months Internship For B.Tech, M.Tech & MSc. students.Β

DRDO NSTL announces an internship every year in the month of June for 6 months internship for final year B.Tech students.Β  A student who has completed third year can attend the internship. It is advised to apply for the DRDO-NSTL internships in the month of march if you are planning to do the internships in the month of May-June. The basic requirement is 75% in B.Tech, MSc or M.Tech.

DRDO labs typically require:

  • A request letter from your Principal / HoD
  • On official college letterhead
  • Mentioning duration (8 weeks)
  • Confirming it is part of academic requirement (training/project)

Without this, applications are often rejected.

You also need to send the following once you are selected, so keep them ready.

  • Updated Resume (1–2 pages)
  • Latest semester marksheet
  • Aadhaar card copy
  • Bonafide certificate
  • College request letter

Write a formal email application and send your application to hrd-nstl@gov.in with the subject lineΒ Application for 2-Month Internship – [Your Branch] e.g. Application for 2-Month Internship – Mechanical Engineering

DRDO NSTL Internship Themes

Underwater Weapon Systems (Torpedoes):Β NSTL plays a pivotal role in the development and advancement of India’s underwater weapon systems, particularly torpedoes designed for the Indian Navy. The laboratory has been instrumental in systems such as Varunastra, India’s indigenous heavyweight torpedo, and TAL Shyena, a lightweight torpedo system. Research in this domain exposes students to the complete lifecycle of underwater weapon development β€” from conceptual design and simulation to testing and operational deployment in marine environments.

Internship Research Areas

  • Propulsion system design and optimization
  • Guidance and control algorithms
  • Acoustic homing technology
  • Warhead integration and safety systems
  • Hydrodynamic modelling and performance optimization

Underwater Sensors & Sonar Technologies:Β A core strength of NSTL lies in underwater sensing and sonar technologies. The lab develops advanced systems for submarine detection, underwater surveillance, and acoustic countermeasures. Research combines hardware innovation with sophisticated signal processing techniques to enhance maritime situational awareness and defence readiness.
